After being downloaded 30 million times in the first nine days of being released and amassing $200 million in revenue since October 2024, it’s safe to say that the world has gone mad for Pokémon TCG Pocket. Whether people tell you they think Pokémon is uncool or not, I guarantee they’ve still got a shiny Machamp and the first Alakazam card they ever pulled tucked away somewhere, and the app has given the 90s kid inside all of us the chance to open foil packs once again no matter where we are.
The release of Mythical Island and the addition of the Mew and Celebi EX cards tied us over for a new release, although admittedly it ruined all of my decks and made me feverishly have to rethink my strategies (curse you Taurus and Serperior!). Now, we’re eager to see what the release of the A2 pack of Pokémon cards will bring, and from the couple of leaks that have dropped so far, things are looking exciting. Here’s everything we’ve picked up from the internet thus far including a potential release date and the cards we can expect to see.
When Will Pokémon Pocket’s A2 Packs Be Released?
Let’s start with the concrete evidence before we get into the realms of speculation. The new Pokémon TCG Pocket A2 packs will release on January 29th, 2025, meaning we’ve only got a couple of weeks at the time of writing before more new Pokémon drop into the app. As for the Pokémon that are going to be in the new release, we can only begin to speculate who will be arriving in the signature foil packs. But I think, looking at the current cards in my collection, we might be about to strike Gold and Silver.
What Cards Could We Expect Next?
If you didn’t get my incredibly bad cryptic clue up above, then I think we’ll definitely be seeing a heavy focus on Johto Pokémon in this next drop. Instead of Mewtwo, Pikachu, and Charizard taking the spotlight, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Ho-oh, Lugia, and Suicune on the front of three new foil packs, with Pokémon like Entei, Pichu, Togepi, Raikou, Umbreon , and more coming to the fold. I’ve been replaying Pokémon Gold on my ModRetro Chromatic recently, so if this rumor is right, I’ll be primed and ready to collect!

A Pokémon leaker on X has further backed up these rumors stating that there will be 230 new cards that will ‘totally change up the meta’. PokeGirlLauren has stated that there will be four new sets, so perhaps we might see Pichu joining the gang and representing the ‘baby Pokémon’. Obviously, this is all conjecture and we don’t have any solid evidence yet, but we’ll all know very soon!
Can I Use My Hourglasses & Pack Points?
So, I have good news and bad news. Hourglasses can still be used to unlock new card drops; it doesn’t matter whether you’ve collected them from the beginning of the game or have just unlocked them in the Mythical Island quests, they’ll work when the new cards drop.
Pack Points, however, can only be used for the sets that you’ve collected them from while opening packs. So if you’ve racked up hundreds of pack points collecting Genetic Apex cards, you can only use them to collect Genetic Apex cards and not new cards from the A2 set. I know it’s disappointing, but you’ll soon rack up Pack Points, especially if you have lots of Poké Gold to open up 10 packs at once!
So there you have it, that’s all the rumors and speculation we have so far. As of this moment, there is nothing concrete on when card trading will arrive apart from the fact that it’s coming in January. Perhaps it will drop at the same time as the new A2 set, giving us all a chance to finally finish both of the current sets.
